The Department of Basic Sciences, encompassing the disciplines of Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics was established in the year 2002 with the objective of laying a strong scientific and analytical foundation for undergraduate engineering education. Since 2018, the Department has been functioning under the Faculty of Engineering & Technology (Co-Education), which was formerly known as Appa Institute of Engineering & Technology at Sharnbasva University, Kalaburagi. Over the years the Department has evolved into a vibrant academic unit that plays a pivotal role in shaping the fundamental scientific temperament of students entering the engineering profession.
The Department is served by a dedicated team of 24 faculty members comprising 2 Professors, 4 Associate Professors and 18 Assistant Professors, widely recognised for their commitment to excellence in teaching and research.
The Department is actively engaged in delivering high-quality teaching to undergraduate (UG) students across various engineering programmes, ensuring that learners acquire a solid grounding in the core principles of Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. In recognition of its academic and research contributions, the Department has been accorded the status of an approved Research Centre by both Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) and Sharnbasva University Kalaburagi.
The Department currently boasts 9 approved research supervisors, who are presently guiding 38 research scholars pursuing their Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degrees. To date 11 scholars have successfully been awarded their Ph.D. under the able guidance of the Department's faculty, reflecting the strength and depth of its research ecosystem.
The faculty members of the Department are distinguished by their outstanding contributions to research having collectively published more than 85 research papers in reputed national and international journals of high impact factor. This consistent record of scholarly output underscores the Department's strong research culture and its faculty's dedication to advancing knowledge in their respective fields of Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.
